Gorgeous Antique Iron Manhole Cover Handle....Circa 1895
Provenance......I found this treasure while on a bike ride in a small town in Northern Illinois
It was lying on the ground broken off the manhole cover it was welded to. The manhole cover originally had 2 of theses handles, you can see where they were welded in place(see photo) The second handle is missing
The manhole cover was made by "Clow" My research shows the manhole cover is likely to date to the late 1800's
I ground off the excess weld material on each end and also ground the base so it would be stable. I also custom drilled the ends to accept the round head antique screws(photo)
This will look amazing on any project
I love the feel of this in my hand, the patina is fantastic and just as found. It has developed a wonderful feel, texture and burnished feel after all the years in the weather
The 2 mounting screws are wood screws, they will work with wood projects 1 inch thick or less.
